How We Review
What Health App Insider is
Health App Insider is an independent editorial publication covering health, sleep, recovery, and fitness apps and wearables. Our assessments are not for sale: no company can pay for a higher score, a better ranking, or a spot on a "best" list. Our goal is to help you cut through marketing noise and find tools that genuinely improve your health outcomes.
Authorship on this site belongs to the Health App Insider Editorial Team — a collective of writers and researchers who evaluate products hands-on before publishing. We do not publish named clinician endorsements or fabricate expert credentials.
How we choose what to review
We prioritise apps and wearables with meaningful user bases or that address a clear consumer need. A product enters our review queue if it meets at least one of the following:
- It is widely recommended in health or fitness communities
- It addresses a specific health category we cover (sleep, heart health, recovery, fitness tracking)
- A newer release materially changes how a category leader performs
- Reader or editorial team nomination
We do not accept payment to review a product, and payment never determines whether a product is reviewed or how it is scored.
Our testing & research process
Every product we review goes through hands-on evaluation. Our process includes:
- Install and real-world use: We install each app and use it for a meaningful period before writing. Wearable reviews include hands-on app testing across different activities, alongside review of manufacturer specifications, published research, and aggregated user reports.
- Specification cross-check: We verify manufacturer claims against official documentation, App Store listings, and publicly available technical specifications. Where claims cannot be verified, we say so.
- Pricing verification: Prices are checked at time of publication. Subscription tiers, free-trial lengths, and in-app-purchase structures are documented from the current App Store or Google Play listing.
- Peer-reviewed research: Where scientific evidence is relevant — for example, the accuracy of a heart-rate algorithm or the efficacy of sleep-tracking methods — we cite peer-reviewed sources. We distinguish between established research and manufacturer-funded studies.
- Privacy audit: We review each product's privacy policy and data-sharing practices as part of every evaluation.
How we rate
Each review produces a score from 1 to 10 based on five criteria, weighted equally unless the product is purpose-built for one area:
- Accuracy of data: How reliably does the app or wearable track what it claims to track?
- Value & pricing: Is the price fair for the features delivered? We compare against category alternatives.
- Privacy & data handling: What data is collected, how is it stored, who it is shared with, and whether users can delete it.
- Ease of use: Onboarding experience, daily friction, and interface clarity.
- Ecosystem & device support: Wearable compatibility, third-party integrations, and platform availability (iOS, Android, web).
Scores reflect our assessment at the time of review. We update reviews when a significant software change materially alters performance.
